Studying Fitness in Australia: Student Visa Australia Requirements

Are you considering a career in the fitness industry and planning to study in Australia? Well before you do so, it’s important to have a good understanding of the student visa requirements in order to pursue your education and build a thriving career. In 2022, there were over 619,000 international students on student visas in Australia, up from 8% compared to 2021. As a personal trainer, studying in Australia can provide you with opportunities to learn from industry professionals, gain hands-on experience, and build a robust network.

Why study in Australia?

Students from all over come to Australia to undertake courses every year. But what is it that draws international students to study there? Australia is widely recognised as having one of the best-designed education systems globally, with eight universities in the global ranking of Top 100 QS World University Rankings in 2023.

Australia is home to some of the best fitness institutes and is known for its personal training courses. Studying in Australia can equip you with the right opportunities to learn the latest industry knowledge, advanced techniques, and practical skills needed for you to excel in your career in this booming industry.

Visa types for international students

There are two different types of student visas available for international students in Australia:

  • Student Visa (Subclass 500) — for all courses registered under CRICOS (courses registered for international students);
  • Student Visa (Subclass 590) — for the student’s guardian (Guardian Visa) if a student is less than 18 years old (this visa does not allow them to work).

Between the two visas, you will specifically need to get the Student visa (Subclass 500). This visa allows you to study, live and work in Australia for a maximum of five years, in line with the course you intend to take. While on this visa, you will also be allowed to work for a maximum of 40 hours per fortnight during term time, and unlimited hours during study breaks. (With the effect of 1 July 2023, the number of work hours allowed during study terms and semesters will be capped at 48 hours per fortnight.) So if you’re looking for a chance to step foot into the fitness industry, you can use this to gain valuable experiences while studying.

To be eligible for the international student visa, you will need to meet certain specific requirements. Here are some of the key ones you should know:

  • Be aged 6 years or older;
  • Be enrolled in a course of study in Australia and provide evidence of enrolment;
  • Meet English language requirements;
  • Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirements;
  • Proof of sufficient funds;
  • Have an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC);
  • Meet health & character requirements.

The current fee to apply for this visa type costs 650 AUD (unless exempted). However, it’s important to note that this price may vary depending on the location where you are applying for your student visa, whether it’s in Australia or outside the country. Additionally, it takes time for your application to be processed, so it’s advisable to allow plenty of time to apply for it and avoid waiting until the last minute. As such, you should apply for your visa at least 8 weeks before the commencement of your course.

Process of getting your student Visa

Before applying  for your student visa, you will need to gather several documents. The process of obtaining your student visa in Australia involves the following:

  • Provide evidence of your English language proficiency

As Australian educational courses are taught in English, you will need to meet the English language requirements in order to gain entry into the course. If you’re not a native English language speaker, you’ll need to provide certificates of results from an approved English language test to be granted the visa.

  • Apply to an educational institution and receive your enrolment

To apply for your visa, you must first be accepted into an Australian study program course. After receiving an offer from your school, you will need to accept it and pay the tuition fees before the Confirmation of Enrolment, otherwise known as COE, is sent to you.

  • Apply for your student visa online

Set up an account on the Australia Department of Home Affairs website and apply for your student visa online. Creating an account will also allow you to track the status of your application. In this process, you’ll be required to attach documents such as your passport details, confirmation of enrolment from your educational institution, proof of Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and proof of your temporary stay in Australia.

  • Submit your visa application and pay the fees

Once you have paid your visa fees, keep in mind that the fees are non-refundable in the event your visa application gets refused. So it’s important to double-check that you are applying for the correct visa type and submit your application early.

  • Attend a visa interview or health check-up review (if required)

After completing the visa application, you should respond to any requests for information promptly, including a possible visa interview or health check-ups. Regularly log into your account to check for messages from the Department as well.

After successfully obtaining your student visa, it’s crucial that you comply with the visa conditions, including maintaining full-time course enrolment, ensuring satisfactory course attendance, and satisfactory course progress. Boxing has been around for centuries as a combat sport, but it has recently gained popularity as a fitness training routine in Malaysia. With the rise of professional boxing events and the success of Malaysian boxers on the international stage, more people are discovering its numerous benefits for both the body and mind. Boxing is a full-body workout that engages all of your muscle groups, helping you to build strength, endurance, and balance. It’s also a great way to relieve stress and tension, boost your self-confidence, and build mental resilience.

Additionally, boxing provides you with the opportunity to be part of a supportive and growing community, where you can train with others, make friends and encourage each other. While it’s a great way to get fit, it’s important to have proper guidance and support to ensure that you’re training safely and effectively. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete, you’ll discover how boxing training can help you achieve your fitness goals and improve your overall well-being.

Customised fitness training program

When you engage a personal trainer for your boxing workout routine, they will create a customised fitness training program that is tailored to your fitness goals, needs, and abilities. This means that the program will be designed specifically for you, taking into consideration your fitness level, experience with boxing, any medical conditions, and your schedule.

Your personal trainer will begin by assessing your current fitness level and discussing your goals with you. They will then design a training plan that is challenging, yet achievable, and that is focused on helping you achieve your goals. This may involve a combination of cardio and strength training exercises, as well as specific boxing techniques.

Your trainer may also take into consideration any limitations you may have, such as existing conditions or injuries, and modify the program accordingly. They may also adjust the program as you progress and achieve your goals, ensuring that you continue to challenge yourself and make progress toward your ultimate fitness goals.

Proper technique

Boxing can be a rather complex sport as it requires a lot of skill and precision, and it can be difficult to master it without proper guidance. With a personal trainer, they will be able to help you break down the different techniques involved in boxing, such as the punches and defense, and teach you how to execute them the right way. They’ll be able to provide feedback and correction as you progress, ensuring that you’re performing each technique safely and effectively.

Proper technique is important because it helps prevent any unwanted injury by ensuring that you are not placing undue strain on your joints or muscles. Another factor would be it can make your workouts more effective by ensuring that you are using the correct muscles and engaging them in the right way. Finally, it can also improve your performance in the sport of boxing, as proper technique is essential for success in the ring.

Accountability

By engaging a personal trainer, there’s added accountability that comes with having someone to answer to. When you work with a trainer, you are making a commitment to yourself and your trainer to show up for your workouts and to give it your all. Having someone by your side can hold you accountable for your progress by tracking your performance, setting goals, and monitoring progress over time. In addition, they will provide motivation and encouragement, helping you to push through and stay committed to your fitness goals.

Accountability helps you to stay on track with your fitness goals, and provides a sense of structure and routine to your workout regime, making it easier to stick to over time. Having a personal trainer also helps you to identify areas where you may be struggling and help you to overcome those obstacles. They may also provide tips and strategies for overcoming mental or physical barriers as well.

Personal attention and feedback

One of the biggest benefits of engaging your own boxing trainer would be the personalised attention and feedback that you’ll receive. When you work with them, they will design a program that is tailored specifically to your needs, goals, and fitness level. They will take into account your strengths and weaknesses, as well as any existing or past injuries and health concerns you may have.

During your workouts, your fitness trainer will provide you with one-on-one attention, helping you to focus on proper form and technique, and making adjustments as needed. Personal attention and feedback are important as it helps to ensure that you’re performing the techniques correctly, minimising the risk of injury while at the same time ensuring the effectiveness. Furthermore, it provides you with a sense of confidence and support, helping you to feel more comfortable and motivated during your workouts. This allows you to progress more quickly and effectively, as you receive guidance and feedback every step of the way.

Mental support

When you work with a personal trainer, you will have someone who is dedicated to your success and well-being, both physically and mentally. Boxing is a physically demanding and challenging workout, and it’s easy to become discouraged or overwhelmed at times. Having a trainer can provide you with the emotional support and encouragement that you need to keep going and stay motivated. They can help you to set realistic goals and develop a plan for achieving them, and provide you with the support and guidance needed to stay on track as well.

Moreover, having a personal trainer can also provide you with mental support by helping you to develop a positive mindset. They can help you to reframe any negative self-talk and develop a more positive and empowering inner dialogue. This can be particularly helpful when you encounter any obstacles in your training or are struggling with self-doubt.

There is no national regulatory body for personal trainers, but several reputable professional organizations provide accreditation and certification for trainers such as the Malaysian Fitness Instructors Association (MFIA).
Certificates III and IV in Fitness in Australia emphasize practical skills, preparing individuals for various careers in the fitness industry through hands-on training and assessment. Curricula for certification programs vary, but most cover theory and practical skills in anatomy, physiology, exercise programming, and nutrition. Some programmes include the Fitness Instructor Course from MFIA and the Certified Personal Trainer from NASM.

In Australia, the nationally recognized Certificate III and IV in Fitness are also recognized in many countries through ICREPS and accredited by Fitness Australia. International certifications like NASM, ACE, ISSA, and IFPA are globally recognized, while Malaysian certifications from MFIA and MASO are more regionally focused but respected in the Malaysian fitness industry.
In general, the cost of obtaining a certification in Malaysia may be lower than in Australia, but this can vary depending on the program and provider chosen.
Both Malaysia and Australia certify personal trainers in specialities like strength, sports performance, and nutrition, with availability depending on the program and provider.

When it comes to determining the value of one’s qualifications in a global job market, it’s essential to consider the level of recognition they hold. In Malaysia, while certain qualifications may be acceptable within the country, it’s crucial to evaluate how they are perceived on an international scale. In this regard, Australian qualifications stand out as a top choice due to their global recognition.

Having an Australian qualification on your resume not only increases your chances of getting hired in Malaysia but also provides you with numerous job opportunities in other parts of the world. As the world becomes more interconnected, the demand for individuals with globally recognized qualifications continues to rise. Here’s How a Personal Trainer Certification Will Help You Migrate to Australia

Are you planning to migrate to Australia for a better lifestyle and a more stable career? Well, if you happen to have a keen interest in the fitness industry, you might be able to turn this dream into reality sooner rather than later. The pathway is simple, get a recognised certification from a reliable fitness school and become a personal trainer Australia.

But first, who is a personal trainer? A personal trainer is a health and fitness expert who works with people one-on-one or in groups to provide specialised exercise and fitness regimens catered to their unique requirements and objectives. Strength training, cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility, and nutrition are among the specialties of personal trainers, who are frequently qualified by recognised organisations. They may work for gyms, exercise centers, or other facilities, or they may operate independently as independent trainers, either locally or virtually. Personal trainers work to assist their customers in reaching their fitness objectives by providing information, inspiration, and advice on good diet and exercise habits.

Now, why Australia? According to Statista, the total revenue of Australia’s burgeoning health and fitness industry is set to show an annual growth rate of 7.17 percent between 2022 and 2027, resulting in a projected market volume of US$436.40 million by 2027. The fitness industry in Australia is one of the fastest growing sectors and promises a stable and thriving career to aspirant personal trainers.

Why is a certification for personal trainer Australia essential to migrate to Australia?

Helps with credibility making it easy to migrate to Australia

Certification from trusted organisations demonstrates competence. A thorough training programme covering important facets of fitness, such as anatomy, physiology, nutrition, exercise science, and programme design, must be finished in order to receive an accreditation. This shows that the trainer has the expertise required to create secure and efficient exercise regimens.

Furthermore, accreditation of certification programmes by reputable bodies ensures that the certification procedure complies with accepted industry standards. Clients can feel confident that the trainer is knowledgeable about the most recent trends and techniques in the fitness business because of this. The fitness industry’s hallmark of professionalism and dedication is certification. It distinguishes personal trainers from other fitness enthusiasts and demonstrates their commitment to giving their customers the best service possible.

Enhances knowledge and skills

Certification not only helps aspiring personal trainers with the understanding of anatomy and physiology, but a good, comprehensive course also helps them become familiar with different workout styles and equips them with the ability to design effective and safe workout programs. Plus, certification ensures that fitness workers meet industry standards and are up to date on industry practices and trends. This enables them to provide their clients with safe and efficient training programmes.

Legal and ethical considerations make it easy to migrate to Australia as a fitness trainer

There can be specific legal requirements for personal trainers in different markets. So, if you decide to migrate to Australia and make it in the fitness industry, you must be aware of liability and risk management, as well as the importance of ethical conduct. This is exactly where certifications can help by providing the latest and most relevant information curated by industry leaders and experts.

Helps build a relevant network of fitness experts and enthusiasts

Meeting other personal trainers and exercise industry professionals can be easily arranged through certification programmes. You can grow your network and establish connections with other like-minded individuals by doing this. Developing connections with other fitness industry professionals can result in joint venture possibilities. For example, as a personal trainer Australia, you could collaborate with another personal trainer to give a joint training programme or with a nutritionist to provide a comprehensive wellness programme.

Best Fitness Schools in Australia to Help You Become Successful Personal Trainers

Personal trainers play an essential role in the fitness industry as they help people achieve their fitness goals and improve their overall health and well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, where sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy eating habits are becoming increasingly prevalent, personal trainers have become more important than ever.

The best fitness schools Australia provide aspiring fitness trainers and coaches with the knowledge and skills needed to become successful professionals in this field. These schools offer various courses and programs that cover a variety of topics, from anatomy and physiology to even nutrition and sports science. Fitness in Australia is a booming industry, especially with the emergence of 24-hour gym chains, which has stimulated the majority of the industry’s growth. According to research, the average salary of a personal trainer in Australia is estimated to be $72,400 per year, with entry-level positions starting at around $62,900.

Assessing the client’s needs

One of the critical first steps for personal trainers is conducting a comprehensive assessment of the client’s needs, goals and fitness level. This assessment helps trainers design a customised fitness plan that is safe, effective and tailored to the client’s specific needs and goals in their fitness regime. It’s important to assess the client’s needs as it helps coaches to understand their client’s current fitness level, such as their muscular strength, endurance or flexibility, in order to design a fitness plan that is safe yet challenging for the client. In addition, assessing the client’s needs would also make personal trainers aware of any health concerns that may potentially impact the client’s ability to exercise safely, and plan a safe and appropriate exercise routine.

There are many different forms of assessment methods available, but some of the most common ones used by personal trainers include body composition analysis, fitness tests, movement tests, and work capacity tests. These tests will provide the necessary information needed to allow trainers to craft a safe, effective and personalised exercise program for their clients.

Designing a customised fitness plan

Once the client’s needs and goals have been assessed, coaches can design a customised fitness plan that includes various components such as cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises. The fitness plan should be tailored according to the client’s individual fitness level, goals, and preferences instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. Aside from goal-setting, trainers help their clients select exercises that are appropriate for them and determine the frequency, intensity and duration for each of them.

Furthermore, personal trainers design a fitness plan that includes a progression of exercises, as the client’s fitness level improves. They may also incorporate other elements such as nutrition, diets and even lifestyle factors, to achieve the best possible results for their client.

Teaching proper exercise techniques

Teaching clients proper exercise techniques is an important aspect of a personal trainer’s role. Proper technique can help clients maximise the benefits of their workouts, avoid injury and develop good habits that can be carried into future workouts. Personal trainers typically demonstrate each exercise and explain them in detail before asking the client to try it themselves, this allows clients to see how the exercise should be performed correctly.

Some common techniques used by personal coaches to teach exercises normally include hands-on coaching, verbal cues and video demonstrations. These generally teach clients the correct form and technique for each exercise and are essential, especially for clients who are new to exercising or are in the midst of recovering from an injury.

Providing motivation and support

Personal trainers play an important role in providing motivation and support to clients. Clients often seek out the expertise of a trainer to help them achieve their fitness goals, and part of that process involves keeping them motivated and on track. They use positive reinforcement to encourage their clients when they reach milestones or make progress towards their goals. Providing performance feedback allows fitness coaches to correct any errors in their client’s form and it also serves as an encouragement and guidance to them.

Personal trainers actively encourage clients to push themselves, while celebrating successes along the way and help them develop a growth mindset, by focusing on progress rather than perfection. By providing motivation and support, they can help their clients stay on track and achieve their fitness goals.

Tracking progress and adjusting the plan

Along the way on your fitness journey, it’s important for personal coaches to track the progress and adjust their client’s fitness plans accordingly to achieve fitness goals. While a weighing scale that’s used to measure one’s body weight may be the most accessible, they only provide you with your weight, without being able to differentiate between muscle, fat and water gain or loss.

Personal trainers utilise other methods to track their client’s progress, such as body measurements, maintaining a workout log or journal, and fitness tests. Keeping track of workouts is essential to understand what types of exercises suit an individual’s body and could help them achieve their fitness goals.

Addressing mental and emotional barriers

These trainers also play an important role in helping their clients address mental and emotional barriers, as these barriers can often prevent clients from reaching their fitness goals. Personal coaches recognize that achieving fitness goals requires more than just physical effort, but also requires mental resilience and emotional strength.

Personal coaches can display active listening for clients by providing a safe space for them to express their feelings, concerns and frustrations that are related to their fitness goals. By actively listening, they can help clients work through their emotions and gain a better understanding of the barriers they face. Additionally, personal trainers can also provide emotional support by empathising with clients’ experiences and acknowledging the challenges they face. This helps clients know that they feel heard and understood by someone. By addressing some of these mental and emotional barriers, private trainers can help their clients develop confidence and overcome the obstacles that prevent them from reaching their fitness goals.

Quan, who’s a great boxer in his own right, is a fantastic trainer in our gym – just ask his clients who have been with him for years! He understands the culture of our gym well, understands the value of hard work, cares about his clients and is a good leader.

So I want to take a step back and help from behind and have a relax time and drinking coffee with my wonderful clients, some of whom I have had for over 15 years now.

15 years! I have been running this business for over 15 years. I think I have achieved a lot. It is time to move on next chapter.

Please congratulate Quan if you know him.

As a student of Fit Education, there are plenty of pathways to grow your career – in Quan’s case, he was able to launch his very own gym.

We are proud to announce that our international students have recently graduated from the Pilates, Boxing and Strength (PBS) course and are now fully prepared to take on real-world clients. The PBS course provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach Pilates, boxing, and strength conditioning to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities.

The course combines Pilates, boxing, and strength training to create a unique and comprehensive approach to fitness and wellness. Pilates focuses on strengthening and toning the core, while boxing provides a full-body workout that includes cardio, strength, and agility. The addition of strength training further enhances the program by improving overall fitness, muscle tone, and endurance.

The Fit Education PBS course covers a wide range of topics, including anatomy and physiology, Pilates mat work, boxing techniques and combinations, strength training, and program design. The course also covers the business aspects of being a fitness instructor, including client relationships, marketing, and financial planning.

The graduates of the Fit Education PBS course are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to teach clients with a variety of fitness goals and needs. They understand the importance of creating safe and effective exercise programs that are tailored to each client’s individual needs and abilities.

In addition to their technical skills, Fit Education graduates are also equipped with the communication and interpersonal skills necessary to build strong client relationships. They understand the importance of listening to their clients and creating a positive, supportive environment where clients feel comfortable and confident.

Fit Education is proud of the success of our international students and looks forward to seeing them make a positive impact on the fitness industry. The graduates of the PBS course are now well-prepared to teach clients with Pilates, boxing, and strength conditioning, helping to improve their health and well-being.

We’d like to give a huge congratulations to one of our PT Course students, Monty, for completing his Certificate IV in Fitness! Monty only started year 11 last week, but already he’s already gotten world class education and real world working experience at Dundee’s Boxing & Fitness. Throughout his studies, he also completed his Certificate III in Fitness with us.

Here’s a heartfelt message from his college, Ambrose Treacy College:

It has been an amazing start to the school year for Monty, who started Year 11 last week. On January 26, Monty completed the requirements of his Certificate IV in Fitness, which now provides him with the qualification of being a Personal trainer. A tremendous achievement for Monty, who started his school-based traineeship in November of 2021 as a 15-year-old, at Dundee’s Boxing & Fitness (at) Indooroopilly. While doing his 575 hours required for the traineeship, Monty also undertook study for his Certificate III in Fitness which is run by Fit Education, completing both his traineeship and Certificate III in October last year. Monty and his family send a big thank you to Chris Weier from Fit Education, Dundee Kim legendary boxing trainer (who was one of the trainers for Jeff Horn for his World Title) and Quan, Monty’s boss at Indooroopilly. Congratulations to Monty!
