Fitness trends, like any other trends, constantly change. As we say goodbye to 2023 and gear up for our 2024 resolutions, more and more people are pivoting to a healthier lifestyle. This shift in perspective has fuelled an increase in interest in several fitness trends, each providing unique benefits and specialised methods to achieve specific wellness objectives.

The most significant recent trend has been a rise in the number of people engaged in fitness, with Australia’s health and industrial business sector earning $292 million in 2022.  The future also appears promising, with predictions indicating a 16% increase in fitness jobs by 2024, reaching 43,900. With a developing health culture and individuals becoming more health-conscious, the fitness business is predicted to grow by 3.7 per cent over the next five years, from 2019 to 2024.

Now let’s look at other fitness trends in Australia:

Fitness program for older adults

Fitness programs for older adults have been a growing fitness trend in Australia over the previous year, and this trend is expected to continue into 2024. With Australia’s ageing population, it’s no surprise that the demand for fitness programs tailored to older individuals is skyrocketing. The concept of ‘active ageing’ has gained traction as older generations strive to feel physically and mentally stronger while maintaining their independence. As an individual ages, even a minor increase in regular movement benefits health and well-being. These programs concentrate on low-impact exercises that increase mobility, flexibility, and balance, thereby assisting seniors in maintaining their overall well-being.

Now let’s look at other fitness trends in Australia:

Fitness Modeling

Parallel to the growth in general fitness interest, fitness modeling is another trend gaining momentum. Unlike traditional modeling, fitness modeling focuses on displaying a healthy, toned, and athletic physique. This field requires a high level of discipline in both exercise and nutrition to maintain an aesthetically pleasing body shape that exemplifies physical health. Fitness models often become influencers, inspiring and motivating others to adopt healthier lifestyles. They also play a crucial role in the promotion of fitness products and trends, making them key figures in the fitness industry. As more Australians become health-conscious, the demand for fitness models who can showcase the benefits of a fit lifestyle is expected to rise. Fitness modeling not only promotes physical well-being but also encourages a balanced and healthy approach to body image and self-care

Pilates

Pilates, which combines physical activity with conscious breathing methods, has established itself as a cornerstone in the Australian fitness landscape. Pilates is terrific for improving your strength, mobility, and flexibility. Everyone knows that exercise releases endorphins, which make your body feel good. Pilates, on the other hand, takes things a step further. A fundamental component of Pilates, rather than relying solely on endorphins, is syncing your movement to your breath. This makes you more conscious of how your inside and exterior interact and complement one another.

Strength training with free weights

weight training fitness trend

With the ability to perform resistance exercises with items like medicine balls, dumbbells, barbells, and kettlebells, free weights offer a versatile approach to strength training that is an ideal start to a personalised fitness regimen. The extra weight puts strain on muscles, allowing them to get stronger. Unlike pin-loaded or cable machines, free weights will enable you to move in multiple planes. This training also frequently requires you to use more stabilising muscles in your lower body. Free weights are simple to use at home and take up little space. They are frequently combined with functional motions such as lunges and shoulder presses. Don’t have weights at home? No worries, you can use household goods like filled milk bottles and food cans to make your free weights. Free weight training is a trend that is here to stay due to its variety and adaptability!

Wearables

wearable tech

The wearable technology trend took off in 2016 and is still thriving in Australia. This fitness trend is driven by the growing recognition of the value of health and exercise, along with technological developments that have made these wearables accessible and affordable. Sports enthusiasts are especially fond of these technologies; according to statistics, over a million Australians between the ages of 25 and 34 use wearables for athletic purposes. Initially used as step counters and to track heart rate, body temperature, calories, and sleep time, these devices have evolved to include parameters such as blood pressure, oxygen saturation, body temperature, and respiration rate. It’s natural for technology to combine with exercise in our linked, digital society. Wearable technologies aren’t simply helping individuals meet their exercise goals; your smartwatch’s data could help your doctor or physiotherapist.

Employing trainers with a fitness training certificate

This fitness trend is growing in Australia, and we’re excited to see how it develops in 2024. In personal training, clients receive one-on-one fitness instruction from a trainer who develops a customised plan to help them reach their fitness and health objectives. The need to have certified trainers is crucial as the fitness sector grows. Hiring fitness instructors with a recognised certification in fitness training guarantees that clients receive professional advice, individualised workout plans, correct safety procedures, injury prevention, and optimal fitness results.

The fitness landscape in Australia is continuously evolving, offering a plethora of options to suit diverse needs and preferences. In this growing industry, personal trainers will continue to play a vital role in providing clients with individualised training, as well as safe training environments, particularly for new and older clients. If you’ve been thinking about a career in fitness or want to take a personal training certificate, now is the time to get started! Find out about our PT courses and get your personal training certificate. Let’s embark on a transformative journey towards a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Age is No Barrier: Discover the New Era of Fitness for the Elderly!

exercise for seniors

It’s a universally known fact by now that the global population is living longer thanks to the remarkable strides and advancements made in medicine and health technology to sustain healthier and longer lives. While it can be a good sign to humanity in general, this trend leads to an increase in the proportions of the size of the older population on top of a decreasing birth rate. The ageing population brings about a  myriad of concerns for the public, especially around the global economy and healthcare. However, at the same time, it allows for new job opportunities to open up in a new niche, such as fitness coaching for older adults to be able to help the ageing group make healthier lifestyle choices.

exercise for seniors

Why exercise matters for seniors

Whether globally or locally, the ageing population all need to exercise for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it is a great benefit to older adults to prevent sickness and disability. As you age, your mobility may start to deteriorate, which can lead to more injuries and illnesses. However, with regular exercise, the deterioration can be slowed if not stopped. While debilitating illnesses from old age including Alzheimer’s may not be preventable, sicknesses like the flu and other mobility issues such as falling and muscle injury can be staved off for much longer.

Other than that, exercising regularly is an excellent way to maintain and improve one’s cognitive and mental health. Allowing your mind to focus on simple tasks like walking around the neighbourhood can improve your memory, and boost your problem-solving ability as well as your emotional and mental health. Exercise is also a great excuse to be able to be outside in nature, which can be highly invigorating for people of all ages.

A fitness routine or an exercise class can also serve as a place for socialisation for some older adults. Once people retire, opportunities to meet new people and create new social routines can be fewer and farther between. There is a lot of news about solitary people in their older age without essential human interaction, which can lead to depression and anxiety among other health issues, so having a fitness routine may help keep these problems at bay, and improve the overall quality of life for older adults.

exercise for elderly

Why tailored fitness programmes for the elderly are a necessity

It is not a surprise that an ageing population will lead to an increase in demand for fitness programmes for the elderly. Most readily available exercise programmes, be it online or offline, do not cater to the older age group. Some can be too physically challenging, while others simply do not serve their needs. Gym equipment is also made for the active and competent younger demographic, targeting intensive muscle-building and strength training. This may limit the number of gym supplies that are inclusive and accessible to older gym customers. These factors alone can lead to higher risks for injuries during exercise. As the body ages, hormone issues and slower recovery can also be a huge contributing factor to numerous body changes that can be hard to understand for trainers who are not specialising in elderly healthcare.

Ways to adapt fitness programmes for the ageing population

The key to an inclusive fitness programme for an ageing population is to start slowly and steadily. The body of a regular adult may need some time to adapt to a new exercise routine, and older adults will need even more than that. It is of course advisable to have your fitness sessions monitored by a professional in order to mitigate injury as best as possible. A certified fitness professional will also be able to correct your postures to improve your workout and optimise your energy levels. On top of that, remember to always use slow and consistent movements in the workouts so you do not overexert your body.

Other than gym workouts, specialised home workout programmes and home exercise equipment are also available for use in the market. Home workouts are often favoured due to their cost-effectiveness and convenience, so if you are looking to take your workouts to the next level, it may be worth a shot to look into some subscriptions or video classes targeted at your age group.  On top of that, there are many home workout equipment you can get at an affordable price to add more to your home workout. Overall, these strategies can be a great beginning in finding and incorporating a well-rounded regimen into your everyday life from as early as possible.

ageing population

In a nutshell

Health is truly wealth. The global population is now seeing a significant ageing trend which can bring about a butterfly effect in the future. It is important now more than ever to make sure that the health of the ageing community continues to be taken care of. Making exercising inclusive to the older population is one easy step to ensure the community maintains a sense of independence and avoids further strain on their lives. Why Australian student visa applications get rejected: A guide for fitness education applicants

australian student visa approval

Australia is known for its first-class and globally recognised education system, enabling graduates to gain a competitive edge in the job market. Combined with its booming fitness industry, which has grown about 4% per year from 2017 to 2022, complete with modern equipment and facilities as well as robust networking opportunities to leverage, this country makes for an ideal place for aspiring fitness professionals to pursue their fitness education.

However, citizens of certain countries will require visas to enter Australia to study, and Malaysians fall into this category. The process can be daunting and nerve-wrecking , and a lack of preparation or research can lead to a visa rejection.

Why are Australian visas so important?

To examine just how significant an Australian visa, be it for study or work, is for Malaysians, let’s first look at what having one can entail.

For students, an Australian student visa gives them access to prestigious universities and institutions that provide various fitness programs to meet different needs. For example, students more interested in coaching and sports development can take a sports diploma, whereas someone more inclined towards personal training can get certified as a trainer. These institutions often have distinguished faculties and can provide a dynamic learning environment.  Students with visas can stay in Australia for up to five years.

For graduates who want to work in Australia, Australian visas allow individuals to join the growing fitness industry, meeting the demands for fitness professionals as a coach, personal trainers, and researchers, among many others. They will have the opportunity to grow their network among fellow fitness professionals and their clients and be up to date with the latest developments in the industry through the countless events and seminars they can participate in. Malaysians, in particular, can apply for a working holiday or skill shortage work visa.

Common reasons for visa rejections

australia student visa

With reports stating that over 50% of visa applications in Australia were rejected in 2022 alone, the application process can seem daunting. Thus, it is important to understand the reasons behind these rejections.

Incomplete or inaccurate documentation: Any visa application in Australia needs many supporting documents, and applicants often do not include enough information. This is the main reason why visa requests are turned down. Each visa application needs a different set of documents to back it up. For example, if you want an Australian student visa, you must provide a letter of offer for your fitness education program and proof of other necessary academic qualifications. People who don’t attach the required documents or forget to do so often have their visas rejected.

Insufficient financial proof: When someone wants an Australian student visa, the Department of Home Affairs must know they have enough money to support themselves. For some visas, you need to have a certain amount of money or income, which can be proven through documents such as bank statements indicating the amount of savings the applicants have. The visa application could be turned down if applicants fail to meet this requirement. For example, as a student, you will have to prove that you have enough funds to cover the following expenses:

  • Your travel in and out of the country
  • 12 months of course expenses, prorated for shorter fitness education programmes
  • 12 months of living expenses, prorated for shorter stays
  • Any school expenses for accompanying dependent children

Health requirement guidelines: One of the most important parts of getting an Australian student visa is meeting the health requirements. Unfortunately, these requirements may result in visa rejections, as   HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis, cancer, major heart problems, and mental illnesses are some medical conditions that can cause your visa to be rejected. Depending on the visa being filed for, the applicant’s family members may also have to meet the health requirements, even if they are not moving to Australia. A health waiver can be given in some special situations, which can be granted by consulting an immigration lawyer.

Tips for a successful visa application

To ensure that you have a seamless visa application process to study fitness in Australia, here are some guidelines you can follow:

  • Ensure you have all the papers you need to support your visa application, such as financial proof, university admissions letter, qualifications, police clearances, etc.
  • Check and recheck your visa application to ensure you answered all the questions properly. Check for mistakes. Even small ones, like a wrong visa number or date of birth, can cause you to be turned away at the border.
  • Ensure you have enough money for the first few months in Australia. The Department of Home Affairs recommends AUD 5,000 as enough money for your stay in Australia and/or to buy a ticket to leave Australia. You must show proof of this when you apply for your visa.
  • Don’t be late with your health check before you apply for a visa. Getting this insurance as soon as possible is best so you don’t have to rush or wait for your application to be processed.

In a nutshell

For Malaysians, going to Australia to build your fitness career or obtain a fitness education can be exciting. But to get an Australian student visa, you must plan carefully and pay close attention to every detail to minimise the chances of getting your application rejected. By understanding the significance of Australian visas and some of the common roadblocks to getting one and making sufficient preparations, people who want to study fitness education or work in the fitness industry in Australia can set themselves up for a smooth and rewarding time there.

A personal trainer’s guide to finding the right fitness program in Australia

fitness programme australia

Your fitness journey is as unique as you are; each individual aims for different outcomes and has various commitments to be mindful of, which is why fitness is a highly personal journey. There are a myriad of factors you have to assess in order to find the right fitness course to achieve your goals without sacrificing the fun and enjoyment of exercising to maintain a long-term habit. It is essential to put the time and effort into finding the right fitness programmes in Australia to figure out where you should start, especially as a beginner.

fitness programme australia

Assess your fitness level and goals

The first and most important step to consider before starting any fitness course is to assess your fitness level. You will need to be honest with yourself about your skill level and ability before you comb through the internet for gym class options. Depending on your ability, whether that is a fitness amateur or a gym buff, you can determine the most appropriate class for your fitness level. Fitness programmes made for beginners are often equipped with generous advice, assistance and guidance to be especially helpful and accommodating to newcomers.

Other than that, your fitness goals will also help you narrow down the right fitness courses for your specific needs. As you decide whether you are aiming for weight loss, muscle gain or an overall body workout, you may find that your overall fitness can also be categorised into:

  • Cardiovascular health, which includes exercises like swimming, jogging, and aerobics that promote heart health and weight loss;
  • Muscle building and strength training, which helps to build muscle mass and increase metabolism, and;
  • Balance and flexibility, including the likes of yoga and pilates, which boost your body’s movements.

From this analysis, you will start to develop an idea of what classes to sign up for that would help you achieve your end goals.

Consider the time and cost commitments

After assessing your fitness level, you should also assess the time and money you will need to invest in your fitness journey. If you are considering joining a class, you should keep in mind the timing and schedule of the classes and whether you can fit it into your daily routine. Realistically, as regular working adults, you may be constrained to an inflexible 9-to-5, so be sure to do your research. On top of that, some classes can be more physically demanding than others, so make sure to allocate enough rest time to mitigate any injuries or burnout to increase your chances of committing to the routine.

Other than time constraints, you may also be tied to a strict budget. This is where research is most crucial, and patience is most needed. Spend as much time as you need to look up different memberships and training programmes in various gyms. While it may be tempting to sign up for long-term membership contracts to grab a big discount, note that different gyms have varied cancellation policies and charges that may cost you more money should you change your mind. Instead, shop around for different options before settling on a fitness course and a gym membership you are confident and comfortable with.

Research different types of fitness programmes

As you narrow down your choices, you should also research the different fitness courses available to you and how they can each get you closer to your fitness goals. If you have any friends or family who are involved in fitness and sports, you can also try asking them for any input or advice on your desired class. Some gyms also have a guest pass you can benefit from if someone you know is a member, so you can try out their gym facilities or programmes for free or at a discounted rate.

The internet is also saturated with information that can help you find out what you can expect from similar training programmes. Note that there are many ways to achieve your end goal, so keep trying out new training courses if one does not excite or motivate you. For example, you may be looking to incorporate a cardio activity into your fitness programme, but you tried and failed at jogging. You can still try a multitude of other exercises like swimming, boxing, and cycling to achieve similar results.

Stay motivated and keep making progress

fitness program australia

Last but not least, in order to achieve your goals, you have to learn to stay consistent and to continue making progress. It can feel especially difficult on some days or when you notice a stagnation in your progress, so here are some tips to help you keep going.

  • Set realistic goals

Oftentimes, as we start a new project, we are tempted to set very ambitious goals while our motivation levels are high. However, this can turn into a catalyst for your deterrence to continue your progress. Instead, try to take smaller steps and set measurable and manageable goals that are more realistic to your lifestyle and skills to motivate you to keep achieving your fitness milestones.

  • Track your progress

On days when you feel like you are stagnating, or that your goals are too out of reach, it can be helpful to look back on the past milestones that you have reached to encourage and inspire you. Keep a diary of your progress and update regularly so you can visibly see progress. You can also turn to social media as a digital diary alternative to hype yourself up and track your bodily changes.

Inversely, scheduling effective progress-tracking can also prevent you from obsessing and overanalysing your progress which can lead to more harmful side effects. Unsurprisingly, like everything else, consistency and discipline work best in moderation.

  • Celebrate your achievements

Find creative ways to celebrate every milestone you hit, even the small ones. Whether you treat yourself to something new, post your achievements online, or even get a sweet treat to cap the celebration off, remind yourself to give yourself a pat on the back for your effort. You deserve the kindness that you freely give to others

  • Establish a buddy system

And finally, if all else fails, you can also ask a friend to be your designated accountability buddy to help maintain your routine. Some people may find it a lot easier to have company for them to hold themselves accountable to their routine or fitness course, so phone a friend and see if that helps you stay on track. To sum it up, making the right decision on what training programmes work best for you is a personal process that benefits from a thorough assessment and understanding of yourself as well as your surroundings. Remember to keep going and keep trying until you find the training routine that works for you, and to never quit trying. Dundee Kim Featured in Majoriti 7: Age is Merely a Number

Majoriti 7 Dundee Kim

Recently, Dundee Kim, the head of Fit Education’s International division, was featured in a comprehensive interview with Malaysia’s first premium weekly Bahasa Malaysia newspaper, Majoriti 7.

In his discussion, Kim touched upon various subjects, mainly focusing on the significance of exercise, particularly for those over 40.

On the topic of why some feel they’re too old to start exercising by the time they hit 40, Kim highlighted that though the body might face reduced flexibility and a decline in bone density with age, it’s never too late to begin. It becomes even more crucial for older adults to remain physically active. Exercise can counteract the effects of ageing, such as bettering cardiovascular health and preserving muscle mass. Kim advises older adults to consult with a healthcare or fitness expert who can suggest exercises tailored to their individual needs.

Kim is unequivocal about the importance of strength training. It’s not only about physical benefits, such as improved posture but also aids in enhancing blood circulation, bettering sleep patterns, and reducing stress.

According to Kim, the drop in exercise enthusiasm post-40 can be attributed to numerous factors, including work stress, prioritising family or involvement in children’s school activities. However, he firmly believes that a blend of daily walking and strength training forms the perfect entry point for late-starters.

Kim emphasises the benefits of engaging a professional trainer, especially for novices. Personal trainers can mould exercise routines to individual needs and impart correct techniques to stave off injuries.

Regarding how often one should exercise, Kim suggests that late-starters aim for six sessions a week with a rest day in between. Starting off gradually helps in avoiding injuries and burnout.

Wrapping up his discussion with Majoriti 7, Kim imparted words of motivation by giving a glimpse into his personal regimen. He begins his day at 5 a.m. with a nutritious breakfast, setting the tone for a productive day, ensuring he can offer the best services to his clients.

Fit for Success on Your Move to Australia: Your Quick and Comprehensive Guide to Preparing for Overseas Fitness Education in Australia

move to australia

Australia is known for many things: its robust and unique wildlife, gorgeous natural wonders, and state-of-the-art cities. But did you know that it is also a great place to pursue your studies in fitness and sports education? With almost 600,000 international students selecting Australia as their study destination this year, the country has a wealth of opportunities for its prospective international students. On top of that, with a fitness industry contributing AUS$ 4 billion to the national economy, it is no wonder that Australia is an unmistakable choice for fitness and sports education.

Moving abroad can be daunting for first-time flyers and seasoned travellers alike, and we recognise that. So, if you are preparing for your move to Australia, buckle up! While packing can be a hassle, here is a list of essentials you must prepare before you take the flight down under.

Move to Australia: Passport and visa documentation

Moving from Malaysia to Australia brings about a barrage of documents that you will need to prepare in order to secure a smooth transition, such as visa documentation, medical documentation, driver’s licence, as well as other specific forms required to enter Australia.

To prepare for your move to Australia, you will need to renew your passport and apply for a Subclass 500 Student Visa. Your passport is required to be valid for at least 6 months after the programme end date of your studies. On top of that, as the visa application requires a list of documents for proof, we also advise you to carry both digital and physical copies of these documents during your travel in case of an emergency. These documents include:

  • Proof of accommodation
  • Proof of enrolment
  • Proof of financial position or funds
  • Proof of genuine temporary entry
  • Health insurance, such as the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and other travel insurance

Additionally, you can also pack these documents for your convenience on the off chance that you may require them during your travel:

  • Certified true copies of your birth certificate
  • Passport-size photos
  • Any receipts of payments made for your travel (e.g. tuition fees, OSHC, accommodation fees)
  • Other personal identification documents (e.g. ID card, driver’s licence)

Medical documentation

Aside from the health insurance documents, you will also need to consider your medical report especially if you have any prior health issues. A medical report may be required during your visa application, but you must also prepare a doctor’s report for any of the medications that you plan on bringing with you on your move to Australia. Other than that, while there are no strict requirements for proof of vaccinations to be granted entry into the country, any vaccination records like the COVID-19 vaccination record should also be kept in both digital and physical forms for your reference.

Student affairs

In Australia, every higher education student eligible should have a Unique Student Identifier (USI), which is a set of numbers and letters that are specific to you. It is used for all of your academic statements and achievements and will stay with you forever. Make sure to apply for your USI online as soon as your visa has been issued! Additionally, you can also read up on the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Framework before moving to Australia to understand your rights and responsibilities as an international student in the country.

Other documents

If you are planning to drive in Australia during your stay, you will need to ensure that your licence remains valid throughout the duration of your stay. You will also need to check with official government websites for the requirements in the specific states or territories you will be studying in. For example, in Queensland, you can use your current Malaysian driving licence as long as you are a temporary resident and your licence is still valid. On the other hand, in the Northern Territory, you can only use your Malaysian licence for up to 3 months before you have to apply for a Northern Territory Driving Licence, even as a temporary resident.

Additionally, because of Australia’s unique circumstances, the country practises strict border control practices, especially in terms of biosecurity. To avoid any confiscation of items, be sure to study the list of restrictions and requirements to pass through immigration and border control. On top of that, you will need to prepare sufficient declaration forms for some of the items you are carrying, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Food items
  • Plant material
  • Animal products
  • All medicine, including prescription, herbal, and veterinary medicines
  • Cash, cheque, traveller’s cheque, or money order equivalent to more than AUS$10,000

Move to Australia: Banking and money matters

It is important to conduct extensive research on the banking processes in Australia as you may need to open one for your daily financial transactions and affairs. Most of the main banks in the country offer an online application process before they require your physical presence in Australia for verification. You may also apply for a Tax File Number, which may not be compulsory in order to open a bank account but will be required if you plan on working in the country. In addition to that, if you are planning to bring some cash, be sure to convert your cash before you go to the airport to get better exchange rates!

Packing your daily essentials move to australia

Packing your luggage is not just a skill, it is a science. There are many factors to consider when packing for your move to Australia. One great factor would be what field of study you will be in and what activities will be a part of the course. For example, if you are taking a fitness and sports education, you will need to pack more activewear than the average student, as it will likely be a part of your daily rotation. On top of that, other factors to consider include the climate and weather of your destination as well as any special gear you should bring with you. And remember to bring your power adapters!

Finally, after all the packing, be sure to check if your luggage is within the weight allowance before your flight. Always be aware of your airline’s flight and baggage restrictions like fluids, aerosols and gels, electronics, and special equipment. You should also keep all important documents in your carry-on in case of any lost checked baggage, and never leave your baggage unattended.

While there is always more to be done in preparation for a big move overseas, we hope our guide can help you take the first steps to gear yourselves up for the big move. If you are interested in finding out more about fitness and sports education, visit Fit Education AUS.

How Can You Benefit From Mentorship in Your Fitness Career?

cert 3 in fitness international study Australia

A mentor is someone who can provide you with advice, constructive criticism, and support. A mentor is typically a person with extensive expertise and experience. The main focus of a mentor-mentee relationship is learning for both parties, not leading. When being in a mentor-mentee relationship, both sides can gain significant lessons and insights.

Learning that leads to a successful and fulfilling job is done outside of the four walls of a classroom and the confines of textbooks. It’s the kind of education where life and experience act as the textbook, and a mentor can be a great asset to help you on your professional path. According to a study by CNBC and SurveyMonkey, those with a mentor are more satisfied with their jobs and are generally happier at their workplace. Whether you’re just starting out your fitness career or are a fitness professional, having a mentor can be a great tool for success.

In this article, we will look at the benefits of mentorship in a fitness career and highlight the invaluable role mentors play in guiding and inspiring aspiring fitness professionals as well as how fitness schools can facilitate mentor-mentee programmes

The role of mentorship on an aspiring fitness professional

cert 3 fitness graduate

One can learn from a mentor’s past experiences

Working with a mentor has many advantages, one of which is that you can learn from their expertise. You can speak with someone who understands the fitness industry directly. In general, mentors have extensive knowledge of the fitness sector. Your mentor will be able to provide you with some advice on what will work and what won’t based on their years of expertise. By simply talking to your mentor, you might potentially save hours of study time. You go through less trial and error since you can avoid making the same mistakes as your mentor. As a result, your fitness journey would be seamless.

Mentors as motivators

When you’re feeling disheartened, a mentor will always inspire you to keep working hard. With a career as a fitness instructor, you will undeniably experience moments of discouragement. Tasks like building your brand and expanding your clientele can feel like overwhelming difficulties. During these hard times, you will be reminded of your goals and objectives by your mentor. Through mentoring, individuals can gain a higher sense of self-worth and confidence which empowers them to take on more responsibility, step outside of their comfort zones, and go above and beyond their expectations. Hence, with good teamwork with your mentor, you can build a more resilient and stronger fitness career.

Mentors as guidance

A mentor’s duties go well beyond creating workout schedules and keeping track of progress. A mentor is also helpful in establishing guidelines within the fitness sector for individuals who are just starting their careers in the field. They can guide you on how to work professionally and play your part well in a fitness environment. You can create work habits that will help you learn and successfully perform your tasks in the fitness business with the help of this advice and direction. With your mentor’s guidance, you can increase your productivity and make a positive impact on your clients and colleagues.

How fitness schools can facilitate mentor-mentee programmes?

why study in Australia student

A good mentor-mentee programme will help foster fitness professionals to succeed and grow. Great mentorship programmes, on the other hand, do not emerge suddenly; they are the result of careful design, continuous improvement, and a long-term commitment to the programme. It’s crucial for fitness schools to create a clear purpose for the programme before putting it into action. However, the main question is how fitness schools can support mentor-mentee programming.

Internships

Fitness schools can consider providing internship opportunities to individuals who are just starting their fitness careers. An individual starting out their career in fitness can receive practical experience through internships. This can be beneficial because an internship teaches the knowledge and skills one would need to succeed in the field. Furthermore, it is a wonderful learning curve for young graduates and students while meeting new people and building professional connections.

Shadowing

A quick way and excellent way to learn and get insights into the industry is through shadowing. Fitness schools can give shadowing opportunities to new fitness professionals. Mentors have a vast knowledge of the industry because they have years of experience in it. They can impart their knowledge and experience to fitness professionals and aid in skill-building. In addition to giving you first-hand exposure to the working world, shadowing is a fantastic method to pick up useful tips and techniques from individuals with more expertise.

Sharing experiences and knowledge

Everybody has their own way of doing things and no two experts adopt the same methods. Fitness schools can facilitate mentor-mentee relationships by sharing working methods, such as how to maintain clients, how to do assessments, and more. This is more to present an alternative viewpoint than to supersede the mentee’s own strategy.

In a nutshell

A fitness career is not just about perfecting physical abilities; it also requires learning about the field, developing one’s soft skills, and acquiring practical experience. Mentorship provides a unique opportunity for aspiring fitness professionals to access a wealth of knowledge from someone who has already walked the path they aspire to tread. A mentor-mentee relationship needs a purpose, a well-thought-out plan, and opportunities for both people to advance in their careers. However, maintaining a mentor-mentee relationship requires a lot of work and time. The process involves more than simply guidance and expertise because it affects both one’s legacy and one’s future. Hence, both sides must work together to make it happen.

How Exactly Does Fitness Education Improve Your Fitness career?

With the fitness industry projected to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33.5% between the years 2020 and 2027, beginning a career in fitness can be exciting and rewarding. However, in order to make a lasting impact in your client’s lives, it is crucial that you have a strong foundation in the field. Here is where a proper fitness education program comes to play.

There is an increasing awareness and interest in health and fitness. For instance, in a survey conducted in Malaysia, about 45.4% of its respondents are aware that they have a balance of healthy and unhealthy days. Meanwhile, in Australia, more than 49% of its young adult population participated in gyms and sports or leisure centres. This results in increased demand in the fitness industry, with Australia notably having over 140,000 people employed in the sector in 2021. This phenomenon underscores the booming fitness industry in Australia and why it’s an excellent place to expand your horizons and improve your fitness career through fitness education programs.

There are numerous universities offering fitness education programs to meet the rising demand. Australia has about 33 institutions offering degrees and courses related to health and fitness. But how exactly does fitness education help jumpstart your fitness career? Beyond certifying you as a fitness professional, here are some ways fitness education can solidify your career path in the field:

Provides knowledge on human anatomy and physiology for effective workouts

A core part of fitness education is understanding human anatomy and physiology, which are crucial for fitness professionals to design workout programs that cater to their client’s needs. Fitness education programs teach you the complexity of the human body, which can include areas such as knowing the muscle groups involved in each exercise, understanding the bone structure and strength, and highlighting how these aspects of the human body work together during a workout routine. By understanding all of these aspects of human anatomy, you would be able to identify your client’s strengths and weaknesses in exercise and provide them with a more effective consultation.

Highlights the correct techniques for maximum benefits and injury prevention

Besides that, fitness education also teaches correct exercise techniques, such as maintaining the correct form for certain movements and understanding which muscle to concentrate on for each activity.

By highlighting any incorrect forms or muscle imbalances, you can further personalise a client’s workout program that is more focused on addressing these concerns. These techniques not only ensure that your clients get the maximum benefit from their workout but also reduce the chances of them getting injured due to improper form. Your clients are more likely to trust you if their safety is actively prioritised during their sessions, which in turn increases your credibility as a fitness professional.

Shapes an understanding of the psychological effects of exercise

Exercise brings not only physical benefits but also psychological ones, and fitness education helps to build a deeper understanding of these benefits. Through a proper fitness education program, you can learn how hormones like endorphins produced during exercise help reduce an individual’s stress levels, which in turn improves their mood. Exercise can also improve an individual’s perception of their body image, which would then help boost their self-esteem.

For example, you, as a fitness professional, can foster a positive mindset in your clients on the purpose of the exercise, such as to be fit, strong, and healthy instead of just focusing on someone’s weight. Understanding these benefits allows you as a professional to understand your clients on a psychological and emotional level and motivate them, especially during the more difficult parts of their fitness journey. Clients who receive consistent support from their personal trainers are also more likely to stay committed towards their goals.

Enables you to utilise data and metrics to make informed coaching decisions

Data matters more than ever in today’s age. As a fitness professional, data is essential to set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) goals for your clients, and fitness education equips you with the skills needed to do this. It helps you interpret data and metrics such as heart rate, body composition, and performance measurements to design optimised and individualised coaching programs for your clients. For example, through data, you may be able to see that your client lacks muscle composition in a certain area of the body, thus you can adjust your client’s program and goals accordingly.

Additionally, data can also be used to visualise your client’s progress, such as through infographics or charts, which can make their results seem more tangible and boost their motivation to continue on their fitness journey. McKinsey reveals that businesses that use data-driven decisions are 23 times more likely to attain new customers, with the chances of retaining existing ones increased by 6 times. With the correct data skills, you can reap similar results in your fitness career as well.

In a nutshell

Fitness education serves as the cornerstone of a successful fitness career as it equips you with all the necessary skills and knowledge as a fitness professional. By understanding the intricacies of human anatomy, the psychological effects of exercise, and data and metrics, you can not only make more informed decisions but create a more effective and meaningful fitness journey for both you and your clients.
